An epic journey before the sea change in communications. I can remember mailing doomed letters at the dysfunctional post office and making phone calls that hardly ever went through—memories that today make me feel like an old codger reminiscing about castor oil and barbershop quartets. Stayed for 6 months with my long-lost friends Mark and Marcia, whose hospitality changed my life. Explored all corners of the island before settling down and teaching English with no training and the barest of lesson plans. Didn't take very many photos during this trip; instead shot about 25 hours of Hi-8 video, focusing on local efforts to save the environment from the consequences of slash-and-burn farming (tavy). One of these days I'll dust it off and upload here.
