Baja Coast

March 2021 • Even during pandemic—or maybe because of it—the American expat scene along the Baja coast is hard to ignore (I'm looking at you Loreto, Nopolo, Bahia de LA, San Felipe, Todos Santos). But a few notable exceptions can be found if you scratch hard enough. Santa Rosalía has nothing for the angler or beachcomber besides historic French architecture and a uniquely un-Mexican layout and vibe. Kuyima eco-camp in Laguna San Ignacio is also fairly expat-proof: the basic tents and cabins are a weird fit for a crowd that rolls in plush acronyms of RV, SUV, and ATV. But other than these unicorns, coastal Baja feels like a roundup of MAGAish fishermen and bikers who punctuate every sentence with a loud, meaningless laugh. Qué lástima.
