Ramazan 2007 • Daniel texted on New Year's Eve to tell me Turkey would be a good fit, so I took him at his word and started saving up. It wasn't long after arrival before someone turked me (did something incredibly generous or hospitable). The second time it happened I thought it was a coincidence. The third, fourth, fifth times convinced me that Turks (and especially Kurds) are some of the most welcoming people on the planet. The best weeks were in the eastern half of the country, near the borders with Syria and Iran. Istanbul is a fine introduction, but you haven't really experienced Turkish hospitality if all you know are the commercial kindnesses of Sultanahmet and Beyoglu.
