September 2020 • Passed through here during a very pregnant pause—one month after the Sturgis rally and one month before a stampede for ICU beds. Thanks, patriots. The western half of South Dakota is among the most beautiful landscapes I've seen in the U.S.—and certainly one of the most American, judging by Mount Rushmore. Not only did we steal the land where Native Americans had lived for centuries, we also carved our faces on it so no one would miss the point. Political signage throughout the state leads one to believe there might be another face added soon.
