Serbia
Novi Sad • Nis
August 2010 • There's more to Serbia than the capital city, but many Belgraders would disagree. Novi Sad is at the northern end of the country—more picturesque and relaxed than Belgrade, and a bit wealthier too. Can't say the same for Nis, located in the far south. Its main tourist attractions are an Ottoman tower made of human skulls and a field where thousands were massacred during World War II. Stayed at the Ambasador Hotel, which functions unintentionally as a diorama of early '80s Yugoslavia.
