October 2007 • The miracle of Hasankeyf was followed immediately by another miracle in Mardin. Met Serdar at an outdoor tea patio overlooking the Mesopotamian plain and ended up spending a week with him and his fiancée, Oznur, in nearby Kiziltepe. Their generosity was an amazement, especially the dinners at his family home, where all eyes fixed on me as I clumsily tried to scoop food off the platter with a spork-shaped hand.
